I am pleased to report that the National Forum have recently funded an update of the review completed by O’Sullivan et al in 2015. Criomhthann Morrison is joining the project as a Research Assistant.
The focus will be on existing research output focused on teaching and learning in Irish higher education, defined as Level 7 and higher on the National Framework of Qualifications. The replication will also take a wide lens, or ‘big tent’ approach (Huber and Hutchings, 2005), including research made public via publication in peer-reviewed and other journals, working papers, reports, theses and presentations at conferences and other fora. Given the upward trajectory in teaching and learning scholarship identified by the original study (see also Tight 2018), it is anticipated that a large volume of material will be located, despite the reduction in the number of publication years to be included. The resulting corpus will allow the National Forum to create an up-to-date and comprehensive database of research on teaching and learning in higher education conducted by researchers affiliated with Irish institutions.
Research from 1st January 2015- 31st December 2021 will be included. The review aims to replicate the original protocol with some modifications agreed with the National Forum to reflect changes in teaching and learning scholarship over the period. The 19 sources included in the original study will be updated to include (a) outputs from National Forum funded scholarship (including VIT&L Scholarship Showcase entries & outputs from NF 2018 impact review), (b) two important new Irish journals (ILTA and IJAP) and (c) additional sources of grey literature identified by Chick et al (2019: Table 3). Covidence systematic review management software will be used to streamline the management of search results, manage duplicates and make the screening process more efficient.
We look forward to getting started.
